Interstate 95 one of the most dangerous highways in U.S.

Motor accidents involving commercial vehicles have become a big concern for authorities across the United States, including those in North Carolina. Interstate highways are the site of many motor vehicle accidents involving commercial vehicles every day and sadly, many lives are lost in these accidents.

That is particularly so for Raleigh and Wake County because Interstate 95 is one of the most dangerous corridors in the U.S. with the highest crash rates in North Carolina, Florida, South Carolina and Georgia. Studies have found that one of the major reasons for the high number of commercial vehicle accidents is that truck drivers fail to stop in time after noticing either a moving or stationary vehicle ahead of it.

In May of this year, four individuals lost their lives and several more were injured when an 18-wheel tractor trailer didn't stop and plowed into several vehicles after failing to notice that traffic had slowed ahead of it. Among the dead were a 25-year-old man and his 1-year-old son, who were in a car ahead of the 18-wheeler.

Experts are discussing the feasibility of equipping trucks with truck collision avoidance technology in order to help reduce such accidents and fortunately, a number of companies have started developing this technology.

According to recent traffic safety data, two to three rear-end collisions involving heavy vehicles occur somewhere in the U.S. every hour. When a heavy duty truck is involved in a motor accident, there are higher chances for fatalities and serious injuries. This new safety data indicates that 3,514 people lost their lives in large truck crashes in 2012 and 67 percent of these deaths were among those who were in cars and other passenger vehicles.

Losing a loved one in a car accident or a truck accident is very traumatic for a family. It not only impacts them emotionally, but financially as well if the victim contributed to the family. Victims and their families should know that there are laws that give them the right to seek compensation from the responsible party.
