Police allege driver negligence following deadly US-64 crash

A driver has been charged with texting while driving after a serious accident in Wake County, North Carolina, left a woman dead and the woman's teenage daughter seriously injured. Additional allegations may be filed against the driver at a later time. The victims were from Wake County, which most know includes both Raleigh and Cary, North Carolina.

Police say that the victims were close to reaching home after taking a trip out of state. Apparently, they had pulled over to the shoulder to switch out drivers for the last leg of the trip. When the woman, who was then driving the family, started to pull back on to the road, another driver slammed in to the back of their car at a high speed. The van flew off the road and eventually flipped.

Police investigating the accident discovered evidence that the driver that rammed in to the rear of the van was in the process of texting as he drove down the freeway. Because he was not paying attention, police claim he did not see the van pull out in front of his vehicle and did not slow down.

Funeral arrangements were pending for the woman who died in this fatal accident. The teen, who is the woman's daughter, was listed in fair condition in intensive care. She is a sophomore at an area high school, where she was on the basketball team.

While it might be too soon after such a tragedy to be thinking about finances, this accident will no doubt leave the victims with medical bills and expenses. Moreover, the family has lost both a source of income and support as well as a loved one who will be deeply missed. Compensation may be available to the victims, especially since it appears the person who caused this accident was engaged in distracted driving.
