Sick leave with pay increases worker safety in North Carolina

United States law does not mandate that companies provide essential paid sick leave for their employees. It is up to the employer whether or not to provide paid sick leave. Some companies do offer paid leave to employees, but some do not offer such leave. A new study indicates that injuries in the workplace may be reduced if employees are offered paid sick leave.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a study which concludes that employees who have access to sick leave perform better. If a person does not have paid leave, lost income for time off becomes a major concern. People often prefer to go to work even if they are sick, when considering their financial needs.

This failure to take necessary time off to heal may lead to a worsening medical condition. In addition, complications from working while being ill can lead to more injuries and unsafe working conditions for employees. The situation can also cause fellow employees to become ill if an employee's medical condition happens to be contagious.

If the employer provides sick leave with pay, productivity may increase. A person should take leave in the early stages of an illness, which will most likely make the recovery quicker and less complicated. If the employee is able to recover more quickly, everyone will benefit in the end. Additionally, injuries in workplace will likely be reduced because the employees will be in good health physically, mentally and emotionally.
