Driver of car that hit motorcycle faces criminal charges

by | Sep 13, 2013 | Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents

Many car accidents that occur on Virginia roads do not result in serious injuries. When an accident is bad however, it could lead to permanent debilitating injuries. These crashes, which can occur in a split second, can change the lives of those involved forever, even in some cases ending a life altogether. This very thing happened last month in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The 16-year-old driver of a car struck a motorcycle ridden by a 43-year-old man. The crash inflicted serious injuries on the motorcyclist that he sadly could not recover from. He died after being transported to an area hospital.

According to the investigation that was conducted into the matter, the 16-year-old should have allowed the motorcycle to pass before attempting to make a left turn. When the younger driver failed to provide the motorcyclist the right-of-way, the collision occurred. As a result of the incident the driver of the car has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Throughout the nation teen drivers are a group that is highly scrutinized. While many teen drivers do follow the rules of the road, because of the few hours most drivers in this age range have logged behind the wheel, their lack of experience, in conjunction with where they are in brain development makes them more prone to engage in behaviors while behind the wheel of a car that could result in a crash.

At this point it is unclear whether the family of the motorcyclist who died will pursue compensation for their loss via a wrongful death lawsuit. Though often a difficult proceeding, many find it helpful in moving on with their lives.
