Truck driver sentenced in fatal North Carolina accident

Over two years ago the families of three individuals killed in a crash on Interstate 40 in North Carolina received the worst news possible. Their loved ones died after the vehicles in which they occupied were involved in a fatal accident that was started when a tractor-trailer struck a car. The man who was behind the wheel of the truck responsible for the incident was recently sentenced for his role. The prison sentence he received is for more than 11 years.

The 52-year-old man, who according to investigators with the North Carolina Highway Patrol had used drugs before the crash, pled guilty to several crimes. In addition to misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana, he also pled guilty to three counts of involuntary manslaughter.

When families lose loved ones in incidents such as this one that are due to negligent behavior of another person, they may not know what to do. In addition to dealing with the emotional aftermath of an unexpected death, the financial side is often left in disarray. This is particularly true when the person who died previously played a major role in providing income for the family. To address this issue some decide to file a wrongful death lawsuit. If successful, it is possible that financial damages could be awarded. These damages could keep the family left behind, above water financially, relieving stress.

For some people a civil legal action such as this one provides relief in another sense as well. It may provide closure to them regarding the death of their loved one.
