Holiday traffic ends in ten fatalities in North Carolina

It is tragic that due to the increase in traffic over the holiday season, the number of car accidents and fatalities also increases. Weather may play a role in many of these accidents since Thanksgiving often marks the beginning of winter weather like snow, ice, and sleet. In many other accidents, however, driver error or negligence is often the cause. Drivers fall asleep at the wheel during long trips, drivers are distracted by passengers, and drivers engage in dangerous and risky behaviors like speeding or drunk driving. While many of these accidents are relatively minor, fatal accidents are not uncommon.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the North Carolina Highway Patrol reported 10 fatal car accidents. The period covered ran from the Wednesday evening before Thanksgiving through midnight on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. State troopers identify speeding as the most common cause of traffic accidents throughout the state. One of the fatalities that occurred over the holiday weekend involved a driver who crashed into another car after hydroplaning and crossing the center line. She received a citation for unsafe tires and also faces charges of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

While any car accident can be traumatic, painful and expensive, fatal accidents are often devastating. The death is usually completely unexpected, so the loss of a loved one is a great shock to surviving family members. The immediate consequences of the crash and the loss are often quite overwhelming. Families must deal with emergency medical care and funeral arrangements, as well as the day-to-day logistics of life.

A wrongful death lawsuit will never be able to bring a loved one back, but it can hold a negligent driver responsible for his or her actions. The compensation victims' families can receive from a wrongful death lawsuit can enable surviving family members to have the time they need to be with each other and grieve instead of worrying about how to pay the bills. An attorney can help make the process as easy as possible and give plaintiffs the best chance of success by investigating the accident and its causes, identifying all potential sources of compensation and quantifying the damages suffered.
