Driver fatigue may be factor in NC commercial vehicle accident

It is not uncommon for a trucking company to make unreasonable demands on their drivers. Drivers are often expected to make unrealistic deadlines -- and to do so, they sometimes speed or sacrifice necessary rest. There are federal trucking regulations that set in place a number of expectations that apply only to drivers of commercial vehicles. When a driver fails to abide by these regulations, either the driver or the trucking company may be found liable for whatever damages result from an accident.

A recent accident involving a commercial tractor trailer in North Carolina may have been caused by driver fatigue. One person was injured in the accident with the tractor trailer. The tractor trailer caught on fire after the crash, forcing traffic to be closed while standstill crews made an effort to put out the fire.

According to officials, the driver of the commercial vehicle showed signs of fatigue during the accident. The driver was unable to remember whether or not he had fallen asleep. He was driving for a trucking company based out of Georgia, for whom he was transporting envelops. Citations in the commercial vehicle accident include careless and reckless driving and failure to maintain lane control.

Drivers of commercial vehicles need to be fully aware of their surroundings. Seeing as they operate such large and potentially destructive vehicles, maintaining adequate rest and exercising due care are musts. Unfortunately, there are cases when truck drivers have a lapse in judgment and victims are often needlessly brought into a scene of wreckage. For these victims, a thorough investigation followed by a strong and aggressive legal strategy can help bring them closer to the compensation they deserve.
