New electronic device may reduce commercial vehicle accidents

| Mar 21, 2014 | Commercial Vehicle Accidents

Unfortunately, commercial vehicle accidents are quite common on North Carolina’s roads. It seems like newspapers are often flooded with reports of a commercial vehicle accident. Help may be on the way, though. According to a recent proposal by the U.S. government, commercial vehicles, such as trucks and buses, would have to be equipped with electronic devices that record the operational time of the vehicles. It is hoped the new regulation, if implemented, would reduce the number of wrecks by keeping tired drivers off the road. Drivers of these vehicles would no longer be able to lie, as the device would show the actual length of time the vehicle was in operation.

Drivers who get tired and fatigued behind the wheel often lose the concentration that is so pivotal when operating these large vehicles. This fatigue often leads to crashes that can leave victims irreparably harmed. Hopefully, though, this new device will be implemented and reduce the number of accidents, injuries and deaths.

According to a recently released report, 35,000 people die each year in motor vehicle accidents and every 10 seconds someone is given emergency treatment as a result. The report suggests that each year financial losses related to car accident medical care is close to $100 million. Those who have been injured in these accidents know just how damaging they can be. Victims may be left unable to work, to take care of their children and to meet their financial obligations. For this reason, they might need help recovering their losses.

Should someone suffer an injury in an incident, it is best to seek the advice of an attorney who may be able to help him or her recover any losses that were incurred. An accident victim and his or her attorney can seek compensation from the negligent driver of a commercial vehicle and the company who hired the driver for the damages done.
