Rural car accident kills one and injures two west of Durham

| Apr 4, 2014 | Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents

One North Carolina woman died and two motorists were left injured following an early morning car accident in Archdale, some 60 miles west of Durham. According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a 59-year-old woman was traveling south on U.S. Highway 311 around 6:50 a.m. when she crossed the center line and went into the path of a truck heading north. A head-on collision with the truck forced the woman’s car back across the center line and into the path of a minivan heading the same direction. After hitting the minivan, the woman’s car ran into a ditch.

First responders reported that the car driver was alive when they arrived; she later died at the scene. The minivan driver and the truck driver both sustained minor injuries.

A state trooper said he could not tell what the deceased driver had been doing in the moments before the fatal car accident. An NCHP investigation is continuing, but the trooper said it was unlikely charges would be filed.

Beyond the possibility of dying in a car accident, injuries can range from minor cuts and bruises to major injuries that can leave someone permanently disabled. In addition to the costs of medical treatment and sometimes long-term rehabilitation, a victim may also suffer monetary losses from lost wages and other benefits because of time needed off from work to recover from injuries.

If a negligent driver injures or kills someone, the victim or a surviving family member has the right to seek compensation, even if it means filing a lawsuit against a deceased driver’s insurer. In this case, both the minivan driver and the truck driver may want to recover damages from the insurer of the car driver.
