Drunk driving involved in Salisbury crash

Despite the efforts of news media and other interested parties, a significant number of drivers in North Carolina, like those elsewhere in the country, still get behind the wheels of motor vehicles after consuming enough alcohol to make them dangerous. Unfortunately, this means drunk driving injuries and deaths occur every day. Among the worst of these accidents are those involving trucks.

One person was seriously injured recently in a crash involving two pickup trucks in Salisbury, some 90 miles west-southwest of Durham. The accident occurred when an alleged drunk driver crossed the center line, and hit another truck head-on.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the Saturday afternoon accident on St. Paul Church Road sent both drivers to an area hospital. The alleged drunken driver was listed in good condition the following day.

Although also listed in good condition on Sunday, the driver who was hit suffered a broken pelvis. The injury will need several surgeries and possibly several years of rehabilitation, according to family members.

NCHP investigators say the alleged drunken driver had no business driving that day because an Aug. 2013 DWI conviction had restricted his driving privileges to weekdays only. Charges are awaiting but will depend on the results of a blood alcohol test taken shortly after the accident. One NCHP officer, however, says the man will likely lose his license for four years and serve time in jail.

Truck accidents can cause incredible damage, injuries and deaths because of the size of the vehicles. Accidents are mostly avoidable, if drivers are sober, adequate safety measures are taken and safe driving practices followed.

Victims of negligent drivers, whether passenger vehicle or truck, should contact an attorney who can guide parties suffering injuries through the personal injury lawsuit process. They can recover medical costs and other damages resulting from a collision.
