What actions should a victim take after a car accident?

Every year, North Carolina residents often witness their fair share of car accidents on the road. Although police and transportation safety authorities implement measures to help keep motorists and pedestrians safe, these measures may not be enough. A car accident may result in severe injuries and in the subsequent period of time that follows, it may be essential to keep certain facts in mind.

One of the most important things to remember is that leaving the scene of an accident, especially one that may have resulted in death or injury, can cause serious legal consequences. It may, therefore, be considered a wise decision to leave the scene of the accident at the appropriate time, after the police have arrived.

In the event that there is significant property damage and personal injury as a result of the car accident, it may be a good idea to call law enforcement officials to the scene. Insisting that a police report is filed regarding the incident can be beneficial and informative for the near future. Additionally, it may be a good idea to write down the names and badge numbers of the responding officers for future reference.

Exchanging information at the scene of the incident is a wise decision. In order to establish liability or to build a case, all information can be of use. Therefore, writing down the names and addresses of all of the parties involved, license plate numbers and basic insurance details, may also prove helpful. Taking photographs of any property damage may be used in the future as evidence. However, the person should be careful when discussing the incident since it may lead to an inadvertent admission of guilt or liability.
