Can a helmet help a motorcyclist minimize accident injury?

For decades, motorcycle helmet use has been emphasized in North Carolina and around the county. It is recommended by state and safety officials that every biker wear a helmet while riding a bike to minimize injuries when involved in a crash. However, sometimes a biker prefers not to wear a helmet for short distances or for convenience; but, a rider should always keep in mind that accidents can happen anytime and anywhere.

Accidents can happen due to a variety of reasons and can lead to serious injuries. However, if riders take safety measures the extent of an injury can be minimized. Statistics show that motorcycle fatalities have increased 55 percent in the last 14 years and in 2010 more than 4,500 people were killed in motorcycle accidents. According to sources, if riders and passengers wear helmets, the extent of head injuries can be minimized which will reduce the fatality rate for motorcyclists. It is estimated that helmets can prevent 37 percent of deaths from motorcycle accident injuries for drivers and 41 percent of fatalities for their passengers.

It is commonly understood that a motorcycle accident can lead to catastrophic results. An accident victim can suffer brain or head injuries, amputations, knee damage, shoulder injuries, fractures and sometimes can also pass away due to the impact of the crash. Due to any of these injuries, an accident victim may have to undergo extensive medical treatment and may have to bear financial losses as well.

State law empowers any victim of a motorcycle crash to claim compensation from the negligent driver. However, a victim should investigate the accident thoroughly and correctly to ensure maximum compensation for lost wages, medical expenses, rehabilitation and pain and suffering.
