The financial impact of fatal accidents on North Carolina

Fatal motor vehicle accidents are one of the top ten causes of death every year in the United States. Drivers and passengers from all age groups, including children, women, men and senior citizens, are vulnerable while using our roads and can become victims of fatal motor vehicle accidents.

Residents of Cary, North Carolina, probably know that more than 1,000 North Carolinians lose their lives in fatal accidents every year. This not only impacts the victim's family and friends emotionally, but financially, as well, since medical costs can run extremely high. In the event of the death of a young adult, this loss is more acute since the person could have contributed to the workforce for many years in the future.

According to 2005 data regarding the cost of deaths from motor vehicle crashes, these deaths in North Carolina resulted in $1.50 billion in medical and work loss costs over the course of one year. This figure includes $1.48 billion in work loss costs and $18 million in medical costs. The cost of death from crashes involving motor vehicle occupants represented 65 percent of the total cost at $975 million, motorcyclists constituted 10 percent of the total cost at $143 million and bicyclists represented three percent of the total at $ 40 million. Furthermore, pedestrians made up 13 percent of the total costs at $191 million, along with an unspecified 10 percent at $149 million.

By age group, the cost of deaths from these crashes involving young adults was 43 percent of the total costs or $650 million, while adults were responsible for 33 percent or $491 million, teens contributed 16 percent or $237 million and children made up five percent of the total or $78 million.

A fatal motor crash can affect a victim's family financially in a very big way and they have a legal right to seek compensation from a negligent driver or any party who may be responsible for the death of their loved one. One may wish to seek the services of an attorney or a law firm for help in seeking compensation through this type of legal action.
