Bus driver facing charges after fatal accident in North Carolina

Usually, when two vehicles of unequal sizes collide in an accident, the extent of damages that the smaller vehicle is likely to sustain is much greater. For that reason, the occupants of the smaller vehicle are always at a greater risk of injuries and even death. One such recent accident, which involved a bus and a sports utility vehicle, occurred in Highway 70 near North Carolina 581.

The accident happened when a bus driver was attempting to make a U-turn on Highway 70. Reports state that while attempting to make the U-turn, the driver failed to yield and the SUV struck the side of the bus. The driver of the SUV, a 40-year-old man, was killed in the accident. The impact was so severe that the rescue crews at the scene had to extricate the SUV driver from the wreck. North Carolina troopers charged the bus driver with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield.

The bus, along with two other buses, was carrying children back home after a football game. Reportedly, there were 30 children on the bus at the time of the accident. Thankfully, none of those children sustained injuries in the accident. The highway was closed and another bus was arranged for the students, who were able to leave the scene of the accident after approximately two hours. The school placed the driver on leave with pay until the accident investigation is over.

Commercial vehicle accidents such as this one can bring about some major difficulties for victims and their families. However, by exercising North Carolina's personal injury laws, it may be possible for victims and their families to obtain compensation from the commercial vehicle driver or the operating company for the losses sustained due to medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, as well as punitive damages, if applicable.
