What are the rules for drivers involved in truck accidents?

Accidents in North Carolina that involve large vehicles, like trucks, can be disastrous. Truck accidents often cause death simply because of their sheer size. Commercial vehicle drivers need to follow the same procedure as private vehicle drivers when it comes to accidents. If a person dies because of an accident, or there is estimated damage of $1,000 or more, North Carolina law requires that the police are notified immediately.

There are certain rules and regulations that must be followed if any truck driver is involved in a truck accident. If a commercial driver is involved in an accident, the driver needs to stop the vehicle immediately and take action to prevent further accidents. If the truck accident involves any dangerous chemicals, the highway sheriff's office should be notified immediately. If the truck accident involves dangerous chemicals, emergency procedures need to be followed. The commercial vehicle driver is also expected to provide assistance to injured parties. It is advisable not to move and injured person if there are risks to the victim's life.

The driver involved in the truck accident needs to provide the name, address and registration number of the vehicle. The collision details need to be provided as soon as possible. If there is a fatality, federal law requires that the commercial vehicle driver undergoes a blood alcohol test.

The transportation department may contact the commercial vehicle operator for more information and the commercial vehicle driver is expected to provide a response about the truck accident within two weeks. Certified copies of the truck accident report also need to be made available. The Department of Motor Vehicles can provide a copy of the collision report.
