How dangerous are teen drivers?

Automobile collisions are far too common in North Carolina, and the reasons can be wide-ranging. Intoxicated, distracted and tired motorists can all pose significant hazards. One reason a driver may be dangerous when on the road is because he or she is inexperienced.

According to the Center for Disease Control or CDC, teen drivers are more likely to fail to recognize dangerous situations. They are also more likely than their older counterparts to speed and follow too closely. Making matters worse, when teens drink, they are at greater risk for an accident than an older adult.

CDC statistics show that, in 2012, 23 percent of motorists between the ages of 15 and 20 who were involved in fatal car accidents had been drinking prior to the wreck. These statistics regarding teen drunk driving are staggering and can certainly be the cause of much heartache across our state.

Those who are struck by a negligent driver, whether a teen or someone who has been driving for decades, may have a hard road to recovery ahead of them. He or she may require extensive medical treatment, lengthy and painful rehabilitation and an infusion of income to replace their medical expenses and lost wages. It can be a time of stress and a sense of being overwhelmed. Yet, these victims do not have to face the uncertainty alone.

In fact, those hurt by the negligence of another can seek to find financial certainty via a personal injury lawsuit. If a victim can show that the defendant was in fact negligent, that negligence caused his or her injuries and those injuries are compensable, then recovery may be possible. Succeeding on a claim, whether through negotiation and settlement or litigation, could mean a victim is able to obtain the medical care he or she needs and acquire the financial stability necessary to focus on a full recovery.
