Why motorcycle accidents are often catastrophic

Riding a motorcycle is often associated with a sense of freedom and excitement. Being out in the open with little more than two wheels between you and the road can make any ride feel like an adventure.

Unfortunately, there is a very dangerous side to motorcycle riding that riders of all levels need to be aware of. According to statistics, motorcyclists are 26 times more likely to die in an accident when compared to people in cars or trucks. In this blog post, we will explore some reasons why motorcyclists are put in such danger in the event of a crash.

  1. Lack of protection for bikers: Motorcyclists have virtually nothing between them and another vehicle in the event of a collision. Cars have airbags, seat belts and a structure designed to take on the brunt of a crash. Motorcyclists, on the other hand, have helmets and protective clothing.
  2. Often happen at high speeds: Crashes on the highway or interstate are typically much worse than those that happen on the streets around town. This is because the force of a crash is much stronger when vehicles are moving faster.
  3. Size discrepancy between vehicles: Motorcyclists are at a great disadvantage because of their size. They are smaller, which makes them more difficult to see, and in a crash between two vehicles of differing sizes, it is most often the person in the smaller vehicle that suffers the most serious injuries.

Because of these factors and the many other hazards motorcyclists are confronted with on North Carolina roads, it is important that riders and their families understand that there may be compensation available after a serious crash. This money can prove to be a critical resource considering how extensive motorcycle injuries typically are.

For information on how to pursue compensation and seek the financial damages you may deserve, it will be wise to consult a personal injury attorney.
