Serious injuries reported in recent Raleigh-area accident

According to reports, at least two people were thrown from their vehicles following an accident on Interstate 540, which as most residents of Cary, North Carolina, know, is located in the Raleigh metro area.

The accident involved a van that was carrying several passengers and a box truck, the type of the truck that can be used as a delivery truck for food and for smaller loads.

The report of the accident stated that the driver of the box truck was apparently on an entrance ramp to the interstate and trying to get on to the highway. As the box truck merged in to one of the traffic lanes, it struck a van that was carrying at least three passengers. The impact of the collision caused the van to flip on the highway. The van crossed the centerline of the interstate and came to rest in opposite lanes of traffic.

The truck also flipped but was stopped by a nearby guardrail. Both drivers were thrown from their vehicles, and, according to police, both suffered serious injuries. Further details about the extent of their injuries were not available. At least two of the occupants of the van also were taken to hospitals, but they were released after treatment.

While there were no reports that police working the accident had laid fault on a driver or had issued a citation, it is one of the rules of the road that drivers on an exit ramp need to yield to traffic on the highway, even if other drivers refuse to allow the vehicle on the ramp to merge. However, improperly trained drivers or truck drivers who are simply paying attention can break this rule, leading to disastrous results. In such cases, victims of negligent truck drivers may be able to to seek compensation for their injuries.
