Recent statistics on motorcycle accident causes

According to a recent report, there were 4,586 deaths in connection with motorcycle accidents in 2014. While this marked a slight decrease in fatalities from the previous year, the number is still remarkably high. In fact, a North Carolinian traveling on a motorcycle is 26 more times likely to die in an accident than a person who is traveling in a passenger car.

Interestingly, while 92,000 motorcyclists were injured in 2014, those who were traveling on a motorcycle were only 5 times as likely to be injured in an accident as a person traveling in a car.

If anything, these statistics illustrate the point that when a motorcycle accident happens in North Carolina, there is a much higher risk that a Cary, North Carolina motorcyclist will get seriously hurt or killed than there is that the person riding in the other vehicle involved will die or even suffer a serious injury.

This statistic is not surprising if one thinks about the size and shape of a motorcycle as opposed to a larger car. There is simply not the same level of protection available for a motorcyclist.

The report goes on to list a number of things that motorcyclists can do in order to avoid serious accidents. For example, motorcyclists should strongly consider wearing a helmet and should certain avoid speeding and intoxicated driving. Also, it is important that a North Carolina resident not drive a motorcycle until he or she is properly trained.

However, it should be noted that, as this blog has discussed before, not all fatal motorcycle accidents are the fault of the motorcycle operator. On many occasions, a distracted driver or a driver who just does not see the importance of taking extra care around motorcyclists will strike a motorcycle, usually leading to serious injuries. In these types of cases, the motorcyclist or his or her family may be eligible to receive compensation via a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit.
