Car accident in construction zone injures two workers

A recent accident in the Raleigh area left two highway workers injured, one critically.

According to reports, a car traveling in a construction zone on I-440 was moving quickly through the work area and hit a truck that belonged to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the agency in charge of maintaining the highways in the state. The truck had its lights flashing.

There were two workers that were outside of the truck when the car hit them. One of the workers flew over the guardrail on the side of the road, but the other one unfortunately was pinned between the truck and the car that hit him. Although the only official details about injuries were that one worker was in critical condition after the accident and the other had left the hospital, eyewitnesses reported that one of the workers' legs may have been severed in the crash.

Although the driver of the car was not technically speeding, she was still arrested for violating North Carolina's "move over" law. In North Carolina, drivers are legally required either to give official vehicles a lane of berth or, at a minimum, reduce their speed somewhat.

Although the workers' lost wages and medical bills may well be covered by their employer, the workers in this case may be able to pursue additional compensation for the injuries by suing the driver. If anything, though, this story illustrates how important it is for all drivers in and around Cary, North Carolina, to be mindful of stopped vehicles on the shoulder of the road. Not being cautious in these circumstances can lead to serious accidents.
