Hazing on college campuses all too common

Each fall recent high school graduates head off to colleges located throughout the nation to continue their education. For many, academics are only part of the experience. Socially it is also an important time in a young person's life and some students opt to participate in fraternities and sororities. While there is no question that the organizations can positively impact the lives of those who participate, all too often there are reports of sorority or fraternity hazing in the news.

What Is Hazing?

Just what constitutes hazing varies. While bullying and situations involving alcohol abuse are commonly associated with the concept, recently a college fraternity was in the news facing allegations of hazing in connection with the hospitalization of a pledge. A family member of the young man indicated he was instructed to drink a beverage that he was lead to believe was a mix of pickle juice and vinegar. In addition, he was allegedly forced to eat cat food. After he ate and drank what was given to him, he vomited blood. While this particular situation occurred in another state, hazing activities occur in North Carolina as well.

Potential Consequences

Depending on the specifics of each situation, the hazing allegations can lead to various consequences. For example, schools could perform student code of conduct reviews or suspend the organizations involved. It is also possible participants could face criminal charges. Other times, when serious injury or death occurs, legal action could be commenced by the injured individual or the family of the person who was tragically lost. While there is nothing that can be done to undo the harm inflicted in each of these situations, financial compensation secured via a personal injury lawsuit may make easier for those impacted to move forward.

The Law Offices of John M. McCabe, P.A., understands how traumatic cases of this nature can be to those impacted. Recently, we represented the mother of a 20-year-old Delta Sigma Theta Sorority pledge who, several years ago, was killed in a car accident. Highlighted on the Investigation Discovery program, Deadly Devotion, authorities believe the fatal crash occurred when the driver of the vehicle fell asleep behind the wheel after hazing prevented her from getting a sufficient amount of sleep.
