One woman died following a serious motorcycle accident on a stretch of Interstate 40, the major North Carolina highway that connects Durham to Cary and Raleigh.
According to reports, the tragedy shortly after a traffic slowdown on the Interstate, an occurrence which, as people who travel on the interstate know, is not uncommon. A conventional vehicle and a motorcycle, which was hauling a trailer behind it, both tried to get in to the left lane.
Unfortunately, the vehicles collided, and both the driver of the motorcycle and his wife and passenger were thrown from the bike. While both the rider and the passenger were rushed to nearby hospitals, the woman later died because of her injuries. Although the driver of the motorcycle had injuries that authorities described as “serious,” he is now recovering out of the hospital.
Law enforcement officers have not issued a failure to yield citation or any other citations at this time in connection with this accident. However, they have stated that their investigation is ongoing.
Especially because neither driver was issued a ticket, it is difficult at this early stage to determine exactly who is at fault and to what extent. The family of the motorcyclists will likely want to see a thorough investigation done, especially since one of their loved ones died and another sustained significant injuries because of this accident.
In any event, the lives of the injured motorcyclist and his family are now permanently altered. No amount of money can undo this tragic accident; however, should it come to light that others were responsible for this accident, the motorcyclist and his family may be able to recover compensation to cover medical bills, lost wages and other costs and expenses.
