Recent statistics on accidents involving large trucks

According to the most recent statistics available from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, of the 411,000 or so truck accidents reported in 2014, about 1 percent resulted in a fatality. Additionally, about 20 percent resulted in an injury significant enough to be reported.

Interestingly, not many of the most serious large vehicle accidents were single vehicle incidents. A sizeable majority of fatal accidents that involved a truck also involved two vehicles, only reinforcing the notion that commercial drivers must be on the lookout for the safety of other motorists. Moreover, a sizeable majority of these accidents happened on a country road off of the interstate.

What might not come as a much of a surprise to residents of Cary, North Carolina, is that many of these truck accidents happen either at dusk or during the overnight hours, a time in which truck drivers and other drivers of commercial vehicles may continue to travel while other vehicles get off the road for the evening. Not surprisingly, almost 85 percent of serious truck accidents happen between Monday and Friday, during the workweek.

These statistics can help North Carolina drivers be aware when there is a better than average chance of getting into an accident with a large truck or other commercial vehicle. For instance, a driver may want to avoid traveling on weekday nights to cut down on the chance of being involved in a truck accident. Still, responsibility for highway safety rests equally with trucking companies and their drivers. A negligent company or careless driver who causes an accident may be held financially responsible for any ensuing injuries.
