Motorcycle season is on the horizon - stay alert

With the warmer weather of March soon arriving in the Cary, North Carolina, area, motorists need to remind themselves to be on the alert for motorcycles on the area's roads. After all, a motorcycle accident involving a larger vehicle can easily, and often does, leave a motorcyclist seriously injured or even dead. It is therefore important at this time of the year for other driver to refresh themselves on some important safety tips for sharing the road with motorcycles.

Perhaps the two most important tips for other motorists are to make sure to give motorcycles plenty of following distance and to be particularly mindful of the presence of motorcycles when making a left turn.

With respect to the first tip, unlike drivers of regular cars, motorcyclists need to be able to maneuver within their lanes in order to avoid dangerous obstacles that a car can simply run over. However, in order to be able to swerve safely, other vehicles cannot be crowding in on the motorcycle in order to limit its movement. Furthermore, motorcycles, just by the way they are built, are able to stop suddenly relative to other vehicles, meaning a car behind a motorcycle is more likely to rear-end it.

With respect to the second tip, many motorcycle accidents happen because a driver turning left simply doesn't see the bike and thereby runs right in to it during the turn. Although it is always a good idea to look both ways before turning left, it is also important to get into the habit of double-checking for the presence of motorcycles before making a turn.

Just like they do for kids when they are passing through a residential neighborhood, drivers in the Cary, North Carolina, area need to anticipate their surroundings. With March on the horizon, this means keeping an eye out for motorcyclists. Should they fail to do so and negligently injure a motorcyclist as a result, drivers may be held liable for damages suffered, meaning they may have to pay compensation to the victim.
