A police pursuit in the Raleigh area ended in tragedy recently, with two people dying. The young man who started the police chase by driving away from officers is also in serious condition, although he is expected to survive and face multiple criminal charges for his actions.
Police attempted to stop the young man after catching him speeding. Although he initially pulled over, he took off again before police could approach his vehicle. During the chase, the driver traveled at about 75 miles per hour and also drove the wrong way, ran a red light, and even went off the road to avoid a police roadblock.
Raleigh police joined the chase when the driver started moving toward downtown Raleigh. Shortly thereafter, the fleeing vehicle stuck a passenger van while speeding at nearly 90 miles per hour. There was a passenger in the fleeing driver’s car who died in the car wreck. A teenage girl riding in the passenger van also died from injuries suffered in the accident. The other occupants of the van, including a 10-year-old, were injured but are expected to survive.
The driver who caused the accident has already been charged with impaired driving, and more charges are pending. The driver has some criminal and arrest history.
While not every case of negligence or recklessness is so cut and dry, this tragic story serves as an important reminder of the devastation that a reckless driver or negligent driver can cause. Recklessness and negligence behind the wheel can and often does lead to disabling injuries and, even, as in this case, loss of life. Victims of reckless drivers may be able to receive compensation through the legal process, though, so victims may find it in their best interests to seek assistance from a qualified legal professional.
