Trucker's logs could help you discover the cause of a crash

The interstates are often the fastest way to get around. Howevrr, these are sometimes unsafe. You have to count on the other drivers on the road to be able to drive in a safe manner. This doesn't always happen.

There is a chance that you will be struck by a semitruck while you are on the interstates in North Carolina. Serious injuries, a damaged vehicle, and considerable expenses often come with these crashes. In some cases, you might want to know what led to the crash so that you can decide what you are going to do.

A trucker's logs

Truckers are required to keep logs about their driving. These logs were once kept on paper in books, but the trucking industry has been moving toward electronic logs in recent years. These logs are a good place to turn when you are struck by a semitruck because they can give you an idea of what was going on with the trucker's shifts leading up to your crash. They might point to trucker fatigue if the trucker has worked a lot of hours recently.

Federal regulations

Because truckers need to be well rested when they get behind the wheel of a rig, they must comply with federal regulations regarding the numbers of hours they are in service. The hours of service regulations differ slightly depending on whether a trucker is transporting goods or carrying people.

Tight hours of service requirements

The hours of service regulations cover how many hours per shift a trucker can drive. A trucker carrying cargo can drive 11 hours with a 10-hour break required between shifts. A trucker who is carrying passengers can drive for 10 hours with an 8-hour break required between shifts.

These regulations even dictate how long a trucker can drive if they have other duties. The driving limits previously mentioned still apply, but truckers carrying cargo can't drive past their 14th hour of on-duty time. Truckers carrying passengers can't drive past their 15th on-duty hour.

Importance of fast action

While the possibility of someone changing a trucker's log book is fairly low, especially when electronic logs are used, taking swift action if you are going to need to review the logs is necessary. The sooner you get access to the logs after the accident, the less likely they are going to be altered. Since these records can be useful in a claim for compensation, you should make sure that you think about whether you need these or not. The information in them could prove to be a big key into why the accident occurred.
