Distracted driving in North Carolina

North Carolina drivers know the importance of safe driving. Unfortunately, many families are affected each year by a serious car accident. One of the major contributors to car accidents in North Carolina and across the country is distracted driving.

In 2015, 1,380 people were killed in an accident in North Carolina. Another 123,000 were injured in a car accident. Distracted driving is believed to play a major role in these accidents. Drivers self-report distracted driving, so the statistic of 21 percent of crashes involve distracted driving is most likely low.

Anything a driver does that takes their attention away from driving can be considered a distraction. These include eating, putting on makeup, using the navigation system or radio and, the biggest distraction of all, the cell phone. The majority of North Carolina residents have a smart phone, which can be a huge distraction when driving. Although illegal, drivers are still sending texts, browsing social media and looking up information on the internet. Any of these activities, including talking on the phone, can lead to a serious car accident. Taking one's eyes off the road, even for a moment, can result in an accident with serious injuries or even fatalities.

When a family has a loved one involved in a serious accident, they can feel overwhelmed and upset, along with being unexpectedly thrown into a financial nightmare. No one expects their loved one will be injured in a crash, but it occurs every day in North Carolina. If the accident was caused by a distracted driver or negligent driver, the family may want to speak with a legal professional skilled in personal injury. An attorney can visit the accident scene, interview witnesses, review police reports and get answers for the family as to what happened. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and other damages.
