Safety tips for your next city stroll

At one point or another, we are all pedestrians. Whether we are walking through a parking lot or taking stroll through downtown Cary, we spend time as pedestrians. Unfortunately, many people forget this when they get behind the wheel. They forget to watch for people on foot or react angrily someone takes too long to cross the street. Unfortunately, due to their vulnerability and driver negligence, thousands of pedestrians die every year due to accidents involving motor vehicles.

Since you cannot rely 100 percent of drivers to operate their vehicles safely and avoid all accidents, it is important to exercise a certain amount of caution while you are walking where cars and trucks are present (even if they are not moving). Read below for some pedestrian safety tips that can help keep you and your family safe.

Opt for the sidewalk

If there is a sidewalk available, use it. In general, the sidewalk is the safest place for you to walk. However, since sidewalks do not line every road, be sure to face into oncoming traffic if you have to walk on the side of the road or in the shoulder.

Make yourself seen

Choose bright colored clothing when you go walking in the daytime, and, if possible, reflective clothing at night. Also, when walking at night or in low light, consider carrying a flashlight. Anything you can do to make yourself more visible to drivers will work in your benefit.

Pay attention

Walking down the street, in a parking lot, or through a crosswalk is not the time to check your Facebook status. Put the phone away and look around you. Try to make eye contact with drivers when you are going to cross the street. Always assume that people operating a vehicle will not see you, so it is up to you to stay alert for danger.

Avoid walking while intoxicated

A significant amount of pedestrian injuries and fatalities occur because of alcohol. Either the pedestrian was intoxicated and stumbled into traffic or a driver was drunk and caused the accident.

Follow the rules you learned as a child

The rules you learned in grade school when it comes to road safety are always relevant, no matter how old you are. This means you should always cross at a crosswalk, look both ways before crossing the street, and only cross when it is safe or the pedestrian signal cues to you cross.

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries after being hit by a car, it is important to remember that you have rights and options. Your personal injury attorney will be able to help you file a claim so that you can get the compensation you deserve.
