Teen drivers can be a source of bad driving

Teen drivers have a reputation for being bad drivers. Many North Carolina residents see a teen driver and worry that they will hurt someone when on the roads. Usually, teen drivers are safe and courteous, but they can also be inattentive, reckless and make poor decisions. These poor decisions can lead to a serious car accident.

In general, a person's brain is not fully developed until they are in their mid-20s, which means teenagers are not fully mature. Most parents of teenagers agree that their child does not always make the best decisions.

Teenagers often take risks that they should not. These may include texting while driving, driving with a group of distracting kids in the car and driving after drinking. Any of these can be deadly for the teenagers and whomever they meet on the roads.

In North Carolina, there are restrictions in place for teenagers to get their license. A teenager is initially issued a restricted license that lasts 6 months. During this time, a teenager cannot drive between 9 pm to 5 am, and they can only have one passenger under the age of 21. Having these restrictions may reduce the number of accidents that teenagers cause.

If a family has been affected by a serious car accident caused by a teenage driver, they may want to speak with a legal professional who is skilled in personal injury. An attorney can visit the accident scene and interview witnesses, review police reports and get answers as to what happened to cause the accident to occur. They can also determine if the teenager was following their restricted license terms. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages.
