Fiery crash on I-40 causes multiple injuries, 3 deaths

Sometimes no matter how safe you are behind the wheel, another driver's negligence or mistake can cause you harm while on the road. That appears to be the case in a recent accident near McGee's Crossroads, which impacted several vehicles.

According to Highway Patrol, the driver of a flatbed truck, who was on a supply run to Wilmington, failed to slow down near exit 319 and eventually slammed in to several vehicles, just after 12 p.m. The impact caused a chain reaction that led to a fiery crash involving a total of nine vehicles.

Multiple people were reportedly sent to the hospital for serious injuries, including the flatbed truck driver, and three people died because of the crash.

Truck accidents: Large vehicles cause significant damage

It took several hours for the highway patrol's accident reconstruction team to attempt to piece together what happened, and the highway was not fully reopened until 7:30 p.m.

The crash is still under investigation, but three counts of misdemeanor death have been filed against the driver. Only time will tell if the negligence was on the part of the driver or the trucking company, as many of these accidents can be traced to corporate policies that reward employees for unsafe driving to increase profits.

In the event of a catastrophic accident, there are so many moving parts that it can be overwhelming during a traumatic time. Truck accidents can be particularly difficult to recover from physically and emotionally.

Families rarely have the energy or the ability to facilitate all the minutia needed in those first minutes and hours to help cover medical expenses. Working with someone who can advocate for the injured and their loved ones can keep whoever is deemed responsible for the crash accountable to the consequences.
