Many drivers on North Carolina roads are impaired

Most drivers in our state understand the importance of safe driving. Safe driving is when a driver is not distracted, drives the speed limit and is not driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Unfortunately, not every driver on the road understands how important safe driving is in not causing a serious car accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted a survey that estimates 20 percent of drivers on the road are driving while impaired. These drivers are under the influence of alcohol, drugs or both. Impaired driving affects a driver's attention and the ability to make quick decisions while driving. It also affects their ability to react to changes in the environment and make difficult maneuvers. Impaired driving is dangerous and can also be lethal.

Impaired driving is illegal in North Carolina, along with every other state in the United States. But, accidents are still occurring because people choose to drive after they have been drinking or taking drugs. These accidents affect a family in a matter of seconds. People are seriously injured or they are killed because of someone else's bad decisions.

If a family finds themselves in a situation where a loved one is seriously injured or killed due to no fault of their own, they may want to speak with a legal professional who is skilled in personal injury. An attorney understands the pain a family is going through along with the unexpected financial strain they may now be facing. An attorney can investigate the cause of the accident and who was responsible. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and other damages.
