These road trip safety tips will keep you out of trouble

When you take to the road for a long trip from North Carolina, you can expect to run into some challenges along the way. You hope this never happens, but you're likely to be thrown for a curve every now and again.

Since you don't want anything to spoil your good time, there are some key road trip safety tips to follow. Here are five that should never slip your mind:

  • Wear your seat belt: Seat belts save lives, so you should strap yourself in before you put your car in drive. Not only does the use of a seat belt reduce the risk of an injury in an accident, but it can also help save your life.
  • Rest before leaving home: The longer the trip, the more likely it is that you will become drowsy at some point. To protect against this, get as much rest as possible before leaving home. Furthermore, if fatigue sets in, pull to the side of the road to re-energize.
  • Inspect your vehicle: A well-maintained vehicle is one that you can trust to get you from point A to point B without incident. From your tires to your brakes, from your windshield wipers to your GPS system, be sure that everything is in good working order.
  • Avoid distractions: As you take on one mile after the next, it's natural for distractions to come into play. Maybe you decide to check your smartphone for text messages and emails. Or maybe you partake in a detailed conversation with your passengers. All distractions are dangerous so avoid them at all costs: God forbid the worst happens due to an irresponsible distraction: You'll have wished you focused on safety first.
  • Don't drink and drive: It should go without saying, but there's never a good time to drink alcohol and operate a motor vehicle. Just the same, watch for others who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

It sounds like a lot, but you have what it takes to follow all of these road trip safety tips. When you plan in advance, you're in better position to avoid a mishap that leads to trouble.

If another driver causes a crash, move to safety and call for help. In addition to receiving medical treatment, take the time to learn more about the cause of the crash, your legal rights and anything you can do to hold the other person responsible for their negligence.
