What are whiplash injuries

No one ever anticipates they will be in a car accident while they are out driving on Cary area roads. Unfortunately, we are not able to predict when a car accident will occur, but most of us will be involved in at least one in our driving lifetime. Most of the time, these accidents do not involve serious injuries, but when they do they can be life-threatening. There are many common car accident injuries. One injury that occurs in a large percentage of car accidents is known as whiplash.

Whiplash is the most common type of soft-tissue injury and occurs to drivers and passengers that were hit from behind. When a car is hit forcibly from behind, it can cause the head to snap violently back and forth. Whiplash injuries can cause damage to muscles, ligaments and vertebrae in the neck.

Unfortunately, these injuries are not always recognized right away, but can show up days later. Signs of whiplash can include a stiff neck, dizziness, headaches, neck pain, memory problems and difficulty concentrating, among others. Treatment may include keeping the neck in a brace for a period of time, physical therapy, muscle relaxants, cervical traction and even surgery.

A whiplash injury may seem like a mild injury, but it can be very painful and significantly affect a person's quality of life. If a person believes they have suffered a whiplash injury as the result of a car accident, they may want to speak with a legal professional who is skilled in personal injury. An attorney can review the circumstance surrounding the accident and determine who was at fault. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, future medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages.

There are many injuries that can occur as the result of a car accident. A person who is injured in an accident due to no fault of their own has the legal right to hold the negligent driver responsible for their mistake.
