Improperly loaded or overloaded cargo can cause serious accidents

As Cary area residents know, there are many trucks on area roads. These trucks are hauling everything from merchandise to lumber to logs. Most of the time, cars are able to safely share the road with these trucks. But there are certain times when truck accidents occur. Sometimes these serious truck accidents are caused when cargo is either not loaded properly or are overloaded.

When a driver gets into an accident with a truck, it often leads to serious injuries. Trucks are significantly larger than cars and, when they contain loads, they can weigh more than 80,000 pounds. Trucks do not stop as quickly as cars and can be slow to maneuver. Some truck accidents happen when the trucks are overloaded.

The maximum weight limit on large trucks is 80,000 pounds while smaller trucks have a lower weight limit. If a truck is over its weight limit, it can put excessive strain on their brakes, tires and engine. Accidents can then happen if a truck's tires blow out or their brakes no longer work.

Improperly loaded cargo is another serious thing that can occur with large trucks. If a cargo load is not properly loaded or secured it can shift. When cargo shifts, it puts the truck off-balance and increases the risk of a truck rolling over or jack-knifing.

If a truck isn't properly loaded it, can also lose its cargo. The cargo can fall off the vehicle and fall into other vehicles on the road or lead to roadway hazards. Any of these situations can lead to serious accidents.

If a person has been involved in an accident involving a truck, they may want to speak with a legal professional skilled in personal injury. An attorney can review the circumstances surrounding the accident and help determine what happened and who was at fault. They can hold the truck driver and trucking company responsible for their negligence and compensation may be available for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages.
