May is motorcycle accident awareness month

As we wrote about in a previous blog, motorcycle accidents continue to increase in North Carolina. Many Cary area residents enjoy riding a motorcycle and do so frequently when the weather is nice. But, occasionally a serious motorcycle accident occurs which can turn a family's world upside down.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has declared May to be motorcycle safety awareness month.

The NHTSA has introduced a new campaign called Get Up to Speed on Motorcycles, which teaches drivers how to drive with motorcycles on the road. They have offered many safety tips that motorcyclists should follow when they are near a motorcycle. These include not following too closely, always thoroughly check for motorcycles around the car, double checking blind spots when changing lanes and when turning left making sure there is enough space for a motorcycle to clear the road before a left-hand turn is started.

In the latest traffic accident data from the NHTSA, motorcycle accidents account for 14% of traffic fatalities even though the motorcycles are only 3% of the vehicles on the road.

It is important for drivers to understand that a motorcycle accident can happen in the blink of an eye if they are not paying attention. If a family has been affected by a motorcycle accident, they may be facing thousands of dollars in unexpected medical expenses as well as emotional trauma. An attorney can review the circumstances surrounding the accident and help the family understand what happened. They can hold the negligent party responsible for their mistake and compensation may be available for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages.

If a motorcyclist gets into an accident, there are often serious injuries. A motorcycle doesn't offer the protections that a car does and even a minor accident can turn a family's life upside down. A family who has been affected by a motorcycle accident has the legal right to hold the negligent driver responsible.
