Teen drinking during prom and graduation can be a serious problem

Prom and graduation are popular times for teenagers to make bad decisions regarding alcohol. Although teenagers cannot legally consume alcohol, they often do when they are in groups and socializing, especially at prom and graduation parties. If a teenager decides to drive after they have been drinking, the results can include a serious car accident.

Teenagers are notorious for making bad decisions. Because their brains are not fully developed until they are well into their 20s, teenagers often do not have the reasoning skills to understand the consequences of their actions.

Regardless, everyone knows that driving after drinking is a bad idea. It is estimated that close to 40% of teens will use drugs or alcohol during prom and graduation season. Hundreds of these teens or the people they get in accidents with will die or have serious injuries. This can mean that North Carolina roads will be unsafe in the next month with thousands of teen drivers drunk on the road.

If a person has been involved in an accident involving a drunk teen driver, they may want to speak with a legal professional who is skilled in personal injury. An attorney can help the victim review the circumstances surrounding the accident and who was at fault. They can visit the accident scene and interview witnesses and review the police report. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and other damages.

During the prom and graduation season it is important for teens to understand the consequences of driving after they have been drinking. If they make the decision to do this dangerous activity, they should be held responsible for their negligence.
