Safety tips for a long summer road trip

With summer heading into full swing in North Carolina, you may be looking forward to hitting the road with friends and/or family. There's nothing more enjoyable than a long summer road trip, but you must always put the safety and well-being of you and your passengers above all else.

Here are five safety tips to follow if you're taking a summer road trip:

  • Get enough sleep before leaving home: One of the biggest concerns with a long road trip is falling asleep at the wheel. Protect against this by getting as much sleep as possible before embarking on your journey. Also, don't hesitate to stop to rest when necessary.
  • Stay hydrated: Many people overlook the fact that staying hydrated allows them to maintain maximum energy for the longest period possible. Sure, it also means more bathroom breaks, but don't let that stop you from loading up on water.
  • Avoid distractions: The longer you're behind the wheel, the more likely you are to lose focus. Maybe you start to talk to your children in the back seat. Or maybe you continually scan through the radio stations. Stay away from distractions while you're behind the wheel.
  • Maintain proper posture: Neglecting to do so will cause your body to ache, thus making it more difficult to concentrate on the road. Also, regular stops can go a long way in preventing aches, cramps and other minor ailments.
  • Share the road: You're not the only one on the road, so make sure you're willing to share it with other drivers. For example, don't get into the habit of racing commercial trucks because you want to make good time. If you spot a negligent driver, such as someone who is speeding, create as much space between your two vehicles as possible.

A motor vehicle accident is sure to ruin your summer road trip, so you should do whatever you can to protect against this happening.

Unfortunately, even if you're doing your best to remain safe, other drivers may not take as much care. If another person causes an accident, move to safety, check yourself for injuries and call 911.

After receiving medical treatment, contact your insurance agent and begin to think about your many options for obtaining compensation from the negligent driver.
