Marijuana use can increase the risk of a serious car accident

Marijuana is becoming more acceptable across the country. Many states have legalized medical marijuana, and more are looking at addressing the legalization of recreational use.

While marijuana is still illegal on the federal level and at the state level in North Carolina, the relaxation of society's views on the drugs has likely had an impact on marijuana's usage. Sadly, many marijuana users fail to realize how the drug can affect their driving ability, a shortcoming that far too often puts innocent and unsuspecting motorists' safety at risk.

Marijuana, like alcohol, can have a profound impact on an individual's driving capacities. To start, it slows reaction time, which means that an individual may struggle to identify changing traffic conditions, slowed traffic, pedestrians, and stop signs in time to take appropriate action to avoid a collision.

Marijuana can also decrease an individual's concentration and impair his or her motor skills and judgment. All of these shortfalls can result in unfortunate results that leave innocent motorists seriously injured.

Studies have found that those who drive while under the influence of marijuana are much more likely to cause a car accident, too. Of course, those with higher levels of THC in their systems are likely to cause a serious accident, as, too, are those who combine marijuana use with alcohol use. With drugged driving becoming more common across the country, accidents caused by marijuana users are probably only going to increase.

Those who have been injured in a car accident caused by a drugged or drunk driver often suffer extensive damages, including medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Victims who want to seek accountability and compensation following one of these accidents should consider meeting with an experienced legal professional to discuss how best to approach their case.
