Why are senior drivers more distracted on the road?

When North Carolina residents hear of distracted driving accidents, they are likely to conjure up images of teen drivers using their cellphones to text and talk while driving. While this is definitely a risky behavior that is being engaged in without regard for consequences, a recent study has identified a new category of distracted drivers: senior drivers.

According to the AAA, senior citizens are struggling with the technology in the infotainment systems that are increasingly built into newer vehicles. Tests conducted showed that drivers ages 55 and older took up to eight seconds more than Millennials to use functions such as navigation and calling. This is especially dangerous, considering the fact that AAA says taking one's eyes off the road for two seconds can double the chances of being involved in a car accident.

Given that touch screens are known to be dangerous, as they distract a driver from the task of driving and force them to glance inside the vehicle for longer periods of time, senior drivers often turn to giving voice commands. However, the very technology that is supposed to keep a driver's eyes on the road can become frustrating and distracting when the commands are not recognized.

Whether one has been injured in a car accident with a distracted driver, a drunk driver or a negligent driver, the resulting injuries can be devastating. The costs of recovery can be even more overwhelming. One way to ease the burden to associated with a car accident caused by someone else's negligence is by filing a personal injury lawsuit against the responsible party. An experienced attorney can asses a victim's case and discuss their options with them.
