CVSA sets up May 5 as start of 2020 International Roadcheck

Truck accidents occur all too frequently in North Carolina and across the country, and many of these are the fault of truckers who violate federal safety regulations. To fight this negligence, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance holds a three-day inspection spree every year called the International Roadcheck. The roadcheck for 2020 will be held from May 5 to 7.

During this inspection spree, law enforcement officers work with CVSA-certified inspectors to stop commercial vehicles at random and check for compliance with truck- and driver-related regulations. Many drivers undergo the 37-point Level I inspection: the most thorough inspection.

To give an example of what the Level I inspection covers, it will check to see that the brakes, fuel system, exhaust system and lights are properly functioning. It will check the suspension, tires, steering, frames and driveline components. Inspectors will see if cargo securement meets the standards of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

On the driver's side of things, the inspection will cover a number of requirements. Truckers must carry the right class CDL, have a record of duty status, carry any necessary medical cards, wear their seat belt and use their electronic logging device. These issues will be the special focus of the 2020 International Roadcheck. Inspectors will affix a CVSA decal on those trucks that pass the test.

Thousands of drivers and tens of thousands of trucks are put out of service every year during these roadchecks, though, as many do not sufficiently see that improper truck maintenance, hours-of-service violations and other negligent acts raise their risk for an accident. Fortunately, those who are injured can at least seek damages, including reimbursement for medical bills and for any wages lost during their physical recovery. They may want to first consult an attorney who works in personal injury law.
