How to safely drive through an intersection

Intersection car accidents are among the most common, as a simple mistake by a driver puts everyone at risk.

Fortunately, there are steps you can personally take to better protect yourself when driving through an intersection. You should always do the following:

  • Take notice in advance: Once you see an intersection ahead, begin to think about the steps you can take to maintain your safety as you travel through it.
  • Slow down: This gives you the opportunity to better assess the situation, while also providing more time to maneuver should you run into trouble.
  • Use your turn signals: It's your responsibility to give other drivers a clear idea of what you intend to do. So, if you're making a turn, signal as far in advance as possible.
  • Watch for cross traffic: This is where trouble is likely to come from, such as if someone runs a red light as you're traveling through an intersection. By slowing down, you can get a better view of cross-traffic, thus allowing you to adjust accordingly to any dangers.

Even if you take extreme caution when driving through intersections, another driver could make a mistake that causes an accident.

Should an accident occur, quickly assess the situation and decide what to do next. Depending on the severity, you may be unable to move your vehicle from the intersection. In that case, it's best to wait for the police to arrive before doing anything else.

After you receive medical treatment, review the police report and your insurance policy. This will position you to file a claim with the idea of obtaining every last dollar of compensation that's owed to you.
