Steps you can take to drive safely at night

Driving at any time of the day can be dangerous and stressful. But when the sun goes down, you have every reason to be even more concerned about your safety.

Here are some steps you can take to drive safely at night:

  • Always use your headlights: Not only do your headlights illuminate the road ahead, but they also allow other drivers to see your vehicle. Without headlights, your vehicle can be almost invisible to others.
  • Combat drowsy driving: Driving at night increases the risk of becoming drowsy, which can lead to an accident. Combat this by getting enough sleep before driving and avoiding substances, such as alcohol and medication, that can make you drowsy.
  • Slow down: Your visibility is limited at nighttime, so driving slowly is a must. The slower you're driving, the more time you have to react, such as if someone darts out in front of your vehicle.
  • Beware of other drivers: For example, drunk driving remains a problem, with many people partaking in this activity after the sun goes down. Keeping a close watch on other drivers can help you prevent a potentially serious accident.

Even if you take these steps to drive safely at night, another driver could cause an accident that puts you in a compromising position.

Should this happen, move to safety and stay in your vehicle. Don't get out, as this increases the risk of another car striking you.

After help arrives, seek medical attention, file an insurance claim and learn more about the steps you can take to obtain compensation from the negligent driver.
