How do you know if a truck driver is drowsy?

Sharing the road with even the safest of commercial truck drivers is nerve-racking. These vehicles are big, they travel fast and some truckers don't really care about anyone else on the road.

Throw in the fact that a trucker could become drowsy while driving, and you have a recipe for disaster.

When driving in close proximity to commercial trucks, keep a close eye on how the driver is behaving. This gives you clues as to whether they're more likely to cause an accident.

Drowsy driving is an issue for truckers who spend many hours on the road. Here's how you can tell if a trucker is too drowsy to be behind the wheel:

  • Lane drifting: If you notice a commercial truck drifting from lane to lane, it's typically the result of one of three things: Drowsy driving, distracted driving or driving under the influence. Regardless of the cause, it's dangerous.
  • Erratic braking: If a trucker is dozing in and out of sleep, it could result in erratic braking (and acceleration).
  • Bobbing head: When moving past a truck, catch a glimpse of the driver to see what they're doing. If their head is bobbing or pointed downward, there's a good chance they're too tired to be on the road.

Drowsy driving is responsible for many accidents, injuries and deaths across the United States every year.Should you find yourself injured in this type of accident, call for help and turn your immediate attention to your health and making a full recovery. From there, take advantage of the many ways to hold the negligent driver responsible for their actions.
