Why do fatal crashes happen?

Did you know that over 38,000 people living in the United States die as a result of being involved in motor vehicle collisions each year? The U.S. traffic fatality rate is a shocking 12.4 deaths per 100,000 people, which is why you see so many crashes on a daily basis.

What's most shocking is that the United States has around 50% more crash deaths compared to any other high-income country. Those other countries include Japan, Canada and Australia to name a few.

Why do fatal crashes happen?

Fatal crashes happen because of many factors. Some may include:

  • Failing to follow the traffic laws
  • Inadequate car following a traffic collision
  • Poor road infrastructure
  • Using nonroad worth vehicles
  • Unsafe driving behaviors

Crashes are a leading cause of death. North Carolina currently has the goal of reducing its fatality rate to 1.15 per 100 million miles traveled. At the moment, its rate is 1.17 in 2020.

As a driver, what can you do to prevent a fatal crash?

Not all factors are within your control, but you should know that there are some steps you can take to prevent serious crashes. Some good tips are to:

  • Drive when there will be fewer vehicles on the roads, such as in the mid-afternoon or later evening
  • Avoid driving at night or when it's dark outside
  • Slow down and acknowledge the speed limit
  • Avoid driving while intoxicated
  • Be aware of, and follow, traffic laws

Crashes happen as a result of a number of different factors coming together at once. All drivers need to be more cautious to prevent them.
