Going out on your motorcycle? Here's why you're at risk

If you want to ride your motorcycle, you are probably already aware that doing so could put you at risk of being involved in a crash. Even if you drive only during the day and during times when there isn't much traffic, it takes only one person to make a mistake and hit you.

To avoid injuries, make sure you put on your helmet (it's a law in North Carolina to wear a motorcycle helmet and for that helmet to comply with Federal Vehicle Safety Standard 218) and stay aware of your surroundings.

What puts motorcyclists at a greater risk of being injured?

The primary reason that motorcyclists are more likely to be injured is that they don't have the protection that someone in a larger, enclosed vehicle has. When a motorcyclist is hit, their body may be struck directly. They could be thrown to the ground, too.

They have very little in the way of protection on their bodies. Even with full riding gear and a helmet, it's possible that they could suffer from broken bones and other impact-related injuries.

Another reason that motorcyclists are at risk of getting injured is simply because of the size of the vehicle. Since their vehicles are smaller, They are harder to see. Since motorcycles are smaller, they may appear to be farther away than they are, which means that other drivers may pull out in front of them thinking that they have time to pass.

As a motorcyclist, you need to be cautious, because it's a fact that others will make mistakes. If you're hit, you may want to look into filing a claim to help with your injuries and other losses.
